The concepts
ilta
(“evening”) and
yö
(“night”) are defined slightly differently in Finnish and English.
Yö
is generally regarded as the period of day normally devoted for sleeping, i.e. roughly the time between 10/11 p.m. and 6/7 a.m. The time between 5/6 p.m. and 10/11 p.m. is referred to as
ilta
(“evening”), but in English it is often called "night" as e.g. in "I have a meeting tonight". The term
tiistaiyö
(literally, Tuesday night) would actually refer to the hours from approximately 23:00 Monday to 06:00 Tuesday, which in standard English would be referred to as Monday night (even though Tuesday technically begins during this period).
